Creating and editing relationship types

In order to link members using a relationship (see Member relationships), your Members360° system needs to have at least one relationship type created.  You can have just one relationship type (for example, Employee), or you can have various different relationship types to reflect the different ways that members are related to each other (for example, Division, Employer, and Partner).

Creating a new relationship type

To create a new relationship type:

  1. Navigate to Members >>Tools and Customizations >> Customize the types of relationships.

  2. The Customize Relationships page opens.  This page lists existing relationships and displays their relationship type and the number of members currently assigned to this relationship. The

  3. Click add new relationship in the upper right.  This will take you to the following page.

  4. In the Relationship type dropdown, choose either Parent-Child or Peer.  The options you see will depend on which you choose.

Example: If you create a relationship between companies and their contacts, you can use Company as the Parent name and Contact as the Child name.

  1. If you want this relationship to be available to new individual members joining online, select the  Available to new individuals.  If this box is left unchecked then this relationship will not be available to use in the new member sign-up process.

  2. If you want this relationship to be available to new organizational members joining online, select the  Available to new organizations.

  3. If you want the children in this relationship to inherit membership information  from the parent select the Inheritance Relationship checkbox (see Member Inheritance).

  4. Click to create the relationship type, or click to abandon the new type.

Editing and deleting relationship types

You can edit an existing relationship type by changing its name or names, as well as enabling or disabling it for online member registration as explained above.  To do so, click on the name of the relationship from the Customize Relationships page.  Then change the name or names used in the relationship.  When you save the changes, all the members linked with that relationship will get their relationship names updated.

Notice that you can't change a relationship type; a Parent-Child relationship will always stay a Parent-Child relationship, and the same with Peer relationships.

note: If you need to add inheritance to an existing relationship that is currently linking members, submit a Support Board request. This action has to be be performed by Affiniscape.

To delete one or more relationship types, click the button next to the name of the relationship.

Note: You can delete a relationship only if there are no members currently linked to each other using the relationship.  The current number of members in each existing relationship type is listed on the Customize Relationships page.  If the number is more than zero, the delete icon will be grayed out, and you'll need to remove all members from the relationship before you can delete it.

Managing the members linked by a relationship

To view all the members currently linked by a relationship, click the button next to the relationship on the Customize Relationships page.  This will bring up a list of all the pairs of members in this relationship.  You can review the members, click their names, or even remove a relationship with the button next to each pair of members.

If you wish to link members together using a relationship, see Linking members using relationships.
