Creating a right navigation
A right navigation is an element that you can place on the right hand side of multiple content pages. Normally, a right navigation is used to create a series of links to help with internal navigation in a section. For example, if you have an "About Us" page, you can make a right navigation with links to sub-pages such as "History," "Leadership," "Location," and more.
When you add a right navigation to a common or sub page, it is always displayed on the right of that page. If you are trying to create a fly-out list of links that appears when you roll over a permanent button, see Navigation menus instead.
To understand what a right navigation is, look at this example of a page with a right navigation. (Notice that the right navigation in this example was created as a colored table of links. Each link goes to a sub page, and each sub page should also contain the same right navigation, making it easy to go from page to page.)
Here's how to create a new right navigation:
Click on the Common Right Navigation in the administration area.
Enter a title for the right navigation so it is easily identifiable. It is best to name the navigation so it corresponds to the area of the web site where it will be used (for example, "About Us").
If you wish, create a container table for the right navigation. This step is not absolutely necessary, but it will help make the right navigation easier to manage. Here is how to build a typical right navigation table:
Click on the table icon
in
the Site Editor.
Define the properties of the table. Common settings are:
Rows: 1
Columns: 1
Padding: 3
BR Color: Your choice
Width: 125
Border: 1
After defining the Table Properties, click OK.
Once the table is displaying in the editor window,
click inside it and enter the content of the right navigation.
HINT: If using a dark background color, it's advisable to change
the text color to something light. To do that, click on the "T"
with the color palette on the 2nd row toolbar and choose the text color.
HINT: You will normally want to enter a series of links separated
by line breaks. Since
these links will usually be going to sub pages, you can save yourself
time by opening your Sub Pages admin link in a new window by right-clicking
the Sub Pages link and choosing "Open in
New Window." Then
you can get the proper link for a sub page, switch windows, create the
link in your right navigation, and repeat until your right navigation
is complete. See
Linking to a sub page
if you need help creating links to sub pages.
Once the right navigation is complete, enter the width (in pixels) of the navigation in "Navigation Width". This should match the width you entered for the table. If you did not create a table, this will define the width the navigation takes up. A recommended width is 125.
Click Submit.
Edit the common page (see Finding
and editing your common pages for help) or sub page (see Editing
an existing sub page for help) where the right navigation should be
inserted. Below the editor, there will be a field labeled "Include
a right navigation?" Any right navigation that has been created will
appear in this pull-down menu. Select the appropriate navigation to display
on the page.
NOTE: If you are adding the right navigation to a content page
that is enclosed inside a table, you may need to adjust the table width
for the content page. Otherwise, your right navigation may "stick
out" past your top banner. Here's
how to adjust the width of the table containing your content page. (If
you are adding the right navigation to a content page without tables,
you can ignore the steps below.)
Click the Toggle Borders
icon
in the bottom left hand corner of the editor.
Once you can see the table borders, pass your mouse over the left hand side of the border of the table until you see a crosshair (two arrows forming a "+").
Once you see the crosshair, click once and the table will be selected.
Click on the Table
icon and
the properties of the table will display.
Change the width so it will accommodate the new right navigation and not exceed the 600 pixel limit.
Click OK.
Click Save to save the web page. The right navigation will only be seen when viewing this page from the front end of the site.
Repeat this process for any other pages on which you wish to include the right navigation.
